                            Welcome to the Fundraising Page

I consider myself to be very fortunate and privileged in many ways, not because I live in a mansion, drive a fancy car and spend the weekend on my yacht, because I don't, but then these things are not important to me. I am fortunate because I am healthy, I have loved ones and friends around me, I have lived all my life in a society where clean drinking water and education are the norm. This education always enables me to find a job, which feeds and puts a roof over my head. I am privileged because, in addition to taking all of the above for granted, I can also afford to travel the world, enjoy the wonders of nature and record images of it for pleasure. Travel however has hightened my awareness that millions of people are not so fortunate.

As a lifelong lover of nature I have long been aware of the enormous challenges facing our natural world, the pressures of climate change and habitat destruction to name only two. Since childhood therefore I have been a member of several conservation organisations, but realising the fortunate position I am in, I have always wanted to do something more. I am a firm believer that we all have something useful to offer, and in my case it is my photography. I would love my images to be used to promote the protection of our natural world, which in turn could even improve the conditions of other people less fortunate than myself. So, if you represent a conservation organisation or charity and think that you could use some of my images, please contact me. Below are a few examples of my work used in this way.

Wildlife Calendars for the RSPB & Nature Kenya

In June 2005 I went to Kenya for the first time to photograph the fantastic birds and wildlife it is renowned for. It certainly lived up to expectations and I shot thousands of images. On seeing the reaction of my work colleagues when they saw some of the images, I realised that they may represent a charity fund-raising opportunity. I approached APS, the supply partner that provides printed stationery to the co-op, where I worked at that time, with the idea that we could use some images to make a calendar that could be sold to raise money for charity. APS were very keen to be involved and agreed to manufacture some high quality calendars at no cost, and as I did not charge anything for the use of the images, this enable me to sell the calendars and donate 100% of the sales revenue to charity. At this stage I had no idea how popular the calendars would be, and they quickly sold out, raising £6,000, which was split equally between The RSPB and Nature Kenya, and the seed was sown

In September 2006 I went back to Kenya but this time a bit later in order to witness the Wildebeest migration across the Masai mara. This time I was looking to get some more good images in the hope of making a 2007 calendar. Again I managed to get some nice images and APS made them into a calendar free of charge and these were sold to colleagues and friends with the proceeds of over £7000 again being presented to the RSPB in the UK and Nature Kenya in Kenya.

In August & September 2007 I visited Kenya for a third time and again images from this trip were chosen to make a 2008 Wildlife Calendar. This calendar also featured images I had taken earlier in the year in South Africa. Again, as Allied Publicity Services (APS) printed the calendars free of charge, all proceeds from the sales were donated to the RSPB and Nature Kenya.

Sales from this calendar amounted to £4000 so this brought the total amount raised for the RSPB and Nature Kenya in three years to £17,000

Many thanks to everyone who contributed by buying a calendar

    Martin.
